I have to learn that I won’t always be able to protect my pypm kids. In a digital age, morons will comment on their videos. I’ve spent countless hours defending the poems of PYPM and Urban Word artists from E-Idiots who have zero comprehension skills. Vision… breathe…

Everyday Should be Saturday
Today is a rainy Thursday. The rain has a way of making you reflect. Maybe because God is in the rain. Maybe because rebirth is in the rain. Either way I’ve been reflecting all morning….. There is something organic about waking up on Saturdays and getting ready for PYPM workshop and/or slam. Something special about seeing someone’s growth not just artistically, but as a human being, from week to week. It’s amazing.
I love the teens of Philly Youth Poetry Movement. I’m proud to coach the BNV Philly Team (along with my bro Kavindu Ade). Happy to work with such an amazing staff. Fortunate Greg had such amazing fore-sight. Every Saturday the best day of my life.

Kai’s “controversial” poem. This topic I can definitely relate to as someone who was told in high school that I “act white” because I got straight A’s, and in college, “I thought you were stupid until you spoke” because I’m black. (Had to compress it all crazy to get it to upload to Tumblr. It had to be removed from “other outlets” due to verbal content. But what happens on Tumblr, stays on Tumblr.) … ;-)
I fucking love this girl. I want to buy her ice cream for every single day of her fucking life. I fucking love her for expressing everything that I feel, even though I’m not a “nigga”. But what I am is a Malay in a country where Malays are supposed to be village-ridden, ill-educated, non-English-speaking pests, despite being named ‘Malaysia’. What I am is a government school product who is instantaneously deprived of scholarships because I refused to exploit a boarding school system that was meant for bright students who couldn’t afford to go anywhere else, because I refused to pull cables like many others did, to get a name, to get a few words on a piece of paper. Here’s to the kids, defying stereotypes around the world. I fucking love you Kai Davis. I have never met you before and I probably never will, but I fucking LOVE you.
I don’t Hate her nor do I like her. You may find what she’s saying is a masterpiece, I think she is just whiny. Wanting others to view her differently when she herself is stereotypical. It’s embarrassing! and yeah, hypocritical too. Ciao.

Don’t the critics realize that even negative feedback is giving the video more views? Reblogging and posting just to talk sh*t is still promo for us stereotypical, embarrassing hypocrites. So hate on haters!! Kai is a world champion youth poet for a reason. And there will be plenty more masterpieces where this came from for many many many years to come.
I think it’s amazing how people think they got me figured out from viewing one poem…. you just better know my life to be talkin shit. I’m not phased though because I have plenty of people in my life who ACTUALLY know me and therefore wouldn’t have said such stupid shit.
You gotta love how a bunch of grown ass men and women have so much to say about a HS Senior. If you get off on that, and that makes u feel big and bad to criticize a teenagers (without any recognizable teaching points) so be it. Far be it for me to knock anyone’s sense of pride. However, if you’d like to actually discuss this topic intelligently, Kai is more than able to articulate herself.
